Is a Dental Bridge or a Partial Denture Right for Me?

January 12, 2024

Woman thinks something over

Many people are looking for a great way to replace multiple missing teeth. Luckily, modern dentistry has a few options that can restore a smile so the patient can flash it proudly again. While dental bridges and partial dentures can both be excellent tooth loss solutions, one is often better than the other depending on the patient’s needs. Here are the differences between these two appliances and why one might be better suited to your situation.

How Do Partial Dentures Work?

A partial denture includes one or more false teeth and is made of plastic or a combination of metal and plastic. The appliance holds itself in place by clipping onto the natural teeth on either side of the gap caused by missing teeth. The false teeth are positioned to fill in these gaps, creating a beautiful and lifelike smile and restoring the patient’s chewing ability. Partial dentures are removable and can last for five years or more with excellent care.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is one or a few sequential false teeth held between two dental crowns. The crowns are cemented to the natural teeth around a gap where missing teeth once were, holding these false teeth in position. These appliances require the alteration of existing teeth and can be placed in as few as two appointments. However, they are irremovable, meaning that you won’t have to worry about misplacing one. Dental bridges can last for up to fifteen years.

Should I Get a Partial Denture or a Dental Bridge?

Everyone’s oral health situation is different, and different patients will require different solutions. If you have only lost one or two teeth in sequence, a bridge may be the better option. However, if you are missing more than that, a partial denture is usually a cheaper option that can replace teeth regardless of them being next to one another. However, only your dentist can make a definitive recommendation as to which appliance is right for you.
