Invisalign is a popular alternative method for straightening teeth because it’s more discreet and comfortable than traditional braces. The clear aligner trays typically take about 12-18 months to gently pull your pearly whites into their ideal placement without bands, wires, or metal brackets. That said, if your aligners aren’t fitting properly or keep popping off, it will slow down your treatment timeline. If this sounds familiar, keep reading to learn how you can help get them situated correctly!
How Do I Know If My Invisalign Fits Properly?
Especially for newer patients, it can take time to adjust to wearing the aligner trays. They should fit snuggly and smoothly to start. If you’ve just received a new tray, you might notice small gaps between your teeth and the aligners. This is deliberate and allows for your teeth to move into their corrected positions. You shouldn’t feel any gaps by the time you’re ready for your next set of trays.
If your Invisalign frequently pops off the back of your teeth or seems to not fit over a certain tooth, one of the following methods could help get it properly positioned.
Get Invisalign Chewies
Invisalign chewies are highly recommended for new patients or those who just received a fresh set of aligner trays. The chewies are small, soft cylinders made to help you get your aligners secured onto your teeth. To use them, follow these steps:
- Insert your Invisalign tray and place the chewy between your upper and lower teeth. Then simply bite down and hold firmly in place for a few minutes.
- Move the bite stick along, continuing to bite down so you’re sure to press against each tooth.
- Stay put a little longer in areas where you feel air bubbles.
- Once you’ve finished, wash the chewy with unscented mild dish soap and lukewarm water then let it air dry. Now it can be reused as needed.
Try this process first thing in the morning and before you go to sleep at night to ensure the best fit possible even while resting.
Wear The Aligners As Instructed
In order to be effective, it’s important to wear Invisalign each day for the allotted time instructed. If you don’t, you risk slowing your treatment timeline because your teeth might not shift as quickly as anticipated. Not only that, but it can take time to adjust to your aligners. If you forget to wear them or go for long periods of time without them on, then you need to start from square one and try all over again. The standard is to wear them at least 22 hours every day, or else your teeth might not shift enough to continue with the next set.
Consider Backtracking If Needed
If none of that helps, you may need to ask your dentist about backtracking. This refers to wearing your previous aligners a little longer since your teeth aren’t quite ready for the new ones. It’s important to let your dentist know if you think you need to continue with your current set because they’ll need to adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
If you continue to struggle with your Invisalign sitting snuggly, call your dentist. They have the skills and instruments necessary to determine why it’s happening and get you back on track. Before you know it, you’ll be back on your way to having the beautifully straight smile you deserve!
